지난 편 문제의 정답과 설명을 살펴보자.

A. Semi-Colon (;)

(ex 1-1) He loves working with you; he even says he doesn’t mind working with you over the weekend.

(Question 1)                                                                                        

What is the role of what comes after semi-colon (;) ?

(A) Elaboration

(B) Exemplification

(C) Addition

(D) Specification

 

<설명> 정답 (A). (A)와 (D)가 혼동될 수 있다. (D)구체화도 일종의 (A)부연설명이기 때문이다. 그러나 부연설명에는 구체화만 있는 것이 아니다.

부연설명(elaboration)의 종류

1. specification(구체화)

2. cause and effect(원인과 결과)

3. comparison and contrast(비교와 대조)

부연설명의 종류를 장황하게 설명할 수 있으나 결국 위의 3가지로 압축된다. 즉 만일 이 문제의 답이 (D)구체화라면 정답이 2개가 된다 (A and D).

정답이 2개일 수는 없으므로 정답은 (A)부연설명이다. 다시 말해 이 경우는 구체화의 경우가 아닌 부연설명의 경우이고 정답은 (A) 뿐이다. 그런데 어떤 부연설명의 경우인지 구별할 필요는 없다. 왜 그런지 다음 설명을 보자.

위에서 부연설명은 다음 3가지 중 하나라고 했다.

1. specification

2. cause and effect(원인과 결과)

3. comparison and contrast(비교와 대조)

그래서 만일 이 문제의 답이 1. Specification이면 답이 2개라고 했다.

여기까지 이해가 안되면 처음부터 다시 읽어야 한다.

1. specification의 경우가 아니면 2인지 3인지 구별해야 할 것 같은데, 그럴 필요는 없다. 왜냐하면 2 이든지 3 이든지 정답은 elaboration(부연설명) 이기 때문이다. 좀 더 쉬운 예를 보자.

(question) What is the passage mainly about?

         (A) a house

         (B) a cat

         (C) a person

         (D) an animal

너무 간단한 경우라 지문도 필요없다. 답이 (A)/(C)인 경우는 제외하자. 만일 내용상 답이 (B)라면 자동적으로 (D)도 답이 된다. 왜냐하면 고양이는 동물이기 때문이다. 그러므로 내용상 (B) a cat이 답으로 보여도 답이 아니다. 조금만 생각하면 어떤 문제인지 예측할 수 있다.

지문에는 cat 이 많이 등장하지만 내용상, 초점은 다른 동물이었고(a dog, a rat, or a snake), cat은 함정이었던거다.

즉 지문의 초점이 무슨 동물이든 cat 과 animal이 모두 선택지에 있고 둘 중 하나가 답이라면 답은 무조건 animal인거다.
